In today's electric vehicle (EV) market, various traditional automakers are vying for a share of Tesla's dominance. One such competitor is Lucid, a company based in Newark, California, which currently offers a single model, the Air sedan.

Despite its premium price of $69,900, the Air has attracted significant attention and praise, even being named one of the top 10 cars for 2024 by Car and Driver. The Air Pure, the base model, has been upgraded for 2025 to become the most energy-efficient vehicle ever, thanks to its smaller, more efficient batteries.
Recently, a key Lucid executive, Derek Jenkins, discussed the company’s strategy to challenge Tesla in an interview with CarBuzz. Lucid is developing three new "mid-size" vehicles designed to be more compact and efficient while incorporating the best features from the Air sedan and the upcoming Gravity SUV. These vehicles are intended to be more accessible in terms of price and appeal to a broader audience. Among the planned vehicles are a sedan aimed at competing with Tesla's Model 3 and a compact SUV to rival the Model Y. The third vehicle could potentially target off-road enthusiasts, similar to Rivian's future R3X.
Jenkins emphasized the need to stand out in the EV market by offering unique products rather than simply mimicking Tesla's designs, which he believes has led to a market saturated with "copycat" vehicles lacking the distinctive appeal of Tesla models. Lucid, with its premium design and distinctive brand image, aims to differentiate itself from competitors and capture a segment of the EV market that desires more than just a Tesla alternative.
