Health officials urge that October is the ideal time to get vaccinated. Vaccines for COVID-19, the flu, and RSV are now widely available. Even though the virus season typically peaks from December to March, getting vaccinated earlier helps provide protection throughout the season.

According to Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, it takes about two weeks for the body to fully build immunity after vaccination, with protection lasting for several months.
COVID-19 cases are already high in the U.S., and the flu is expected to follow soon. Hamilton encourages vaccination as soon as possible to minimize hospitalizations and illness duration. CDC forecasts suggest this season will be similar to the last one, which saw over 20 hospitalizations per 100,000 people at its peak and a significant number of flu-related deaths among unvaccinated children.

Vaccination is a key factor in controlling respiratory illnesses this season. The fall vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe infections and reducing time spent being ill or hospitalized.
